Monumento Equestre a Vittorio Emanuele II

At the centre of the magnificent piazza del Duomo in Milan, and in line with the central door of the cathedral, stands the equestrian monument to Vittorio Emanuele II. The bronze statue was commissioned to the sculptor Ercole Rosa in 1878 and was placed in the centre of the piazza in 1896. It represents the king of the battle of San Martino on his horse and is supported by a bronze base flanked by two lions and decorated with sculpted scenes that represent the Franco-Piedmontese troops during their entrance into Milan in 1859.
