Basilica - Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie is a 17th century church which stands in the lower part of Modica. It was built following the discovery, in 1615, of a small painting depicting the Virgin and the Child Christ. The work was entrusted to the architect Vincenzo Mirabella from Syracuse, a Felow of the most important italian Academy, the Lincei National Academy; he is buried here. Date back to the early 17th century the lateral portal, of late Renaissance style, and the bell tower to the left of the prospect, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in late Baroque style. In 2015 the sanctuary was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica
