Cassero Senese

The Cassero Senese (XIV century) is a huge fortification along the walls, located in the complex of the Bastion Fortezza. Together with Porta Vecchia, the Cassero is the only architectural element of the city walls of Middle Ages that was spared during the reconstruction of the walls, in the second half of the sixteenth century. Having been for many centuries the central element of the defense system of the city of Grosseto, the Cassero housed the Military District between the mid-nineteenth century and the Second World War; in the last decades of the last century, a series of restoration works allowed the restoration and upgrading of the entire structure.
