Grotta Municipale

The caves of Santarcangelo are on the eastern slope of Monte Giove. They form three separate levels and are classified, by structure, as either simple or complex. What the caves have been used for has been the object of study for some time, and though they are primarily associated with the storage of wine, in ancient times they may well have been used for cult purposes: Etruscan tombs, Palaeochristian caves, Mithraic sacella, and places for the veneration of sidereal space.
