Oratorio di San Crispino

The Palace of San Crispino, also called "Oratory of shoemakers" or "S. Crispino", is located in Piazza Trento e Trieste, on the corner of Via Mazzini and Via Contrari: its origins are legendary. It is said that this seat was given by Charlemagne to the Guild of Shoemakers in 808, on the occasion of his visit to Ferrara, as a reward for services to a shoemaker who had offered his services to him. Initially the building was the headquarters of the University. The Guild of Shoemakers decided to use some rooms to found an Oratory after a fire, and they dedicated it to Saints Crispin and Crispiniano (their patrons).
