Ospedale degli Onesti e Albergo dei Poveri

The "Ospedale degli Onesti" is one of the oldest hospitals in Modica, founded in 1774 thanks to the priest Rosario Di Benedetto and the layman John Lucifora for the poor and for people who were not sick of venereal diseases (back then considered a "dishonest" disease). The legacy of Cristina Schininà, widow of the Marquis Lorefice Romualdo (died in 1829) enriched in 1832 the endowment of this rich social institution by creating the "Albergo dei poveri" (Hospital for the poor people).
